Getting To Yes - Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In

Whether you realize it or not, everything in life is a negotiation and "Getting To Yes" is a book which provides a formula to master it. The authors are accomplished individuals and served as negotiation advisers and mediators in conflicts in the Middle East, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, Indonesia, Yugoslavia, Chechnya, and Venezuela among other countries. They have done this by using the Principled Negotiation method which is the best method to negotiate sustainably. This method steers clear from suggesting the use of tricky tactics. They do a great job in providing a simple and powerful formula which can be applied to situations in everyday life.

This is one of those books that I recommend to anyone and everyone due to how applicable it is. Especially to those who work in engineering, law, sales, management, own a business, or make deals. Others who often give in when negotiating seems impossible should read this book. If you don't know how to reason with certain people, you should read this book. If you ever feel like you have been ripped off and didn't know what to do, read this book.

It does a very good job at identifying several negotiation scenarios which commonly occur. It gives you classic examples of each and also shows how principled negotiation can be applied to resolve each issue. What happens if two boys want the last orange? Don't be two quick to split it in half. What if someone uses their position to overrule you? This book has those answers and many more.

"But what about people who don't cooperate?? You don't know ____. You have never dealt with them!"

This book stays away from advocating for sleazy tricks or tactics and, in fact, this book shows you how to spot tricky tactics others use. It also shows you how you would apply principled negotiation in each instance. Of course, there are times where you just can't do anything and this book also shows you how to express your thoughts and best move forward.

Principled Negotiation is a well rounded method and has proven itself in many situations. Personally, I believe in this method and agree with the points made in this book. They are simple and easy steps to follow. They provide plenty of examples for you to become familiar with each aspect and at the end of the book you feel prepared to start trying out this method for yourself.
